About Our Trip

Short version: Quit Jobs.  Quit Los Angeles.  Bought bus.  Drove away.

Long Version:  Basey and I dedicated one year to travel North America by motor coach.  We ejected from a nervous California housing market and put our money in the only other thing guaranteed to lose value over the next calender year: a 1991 Prevost Bus Conversion.  Our idea was to travel for one year, see some people and places, plot our next career moves, and find a place to live if we don’t return to LA.  This idea of an extended RV trip was inspired by 2 spring-break RV trips I took in college.  I’ve been dreaming of an excuse to live in a bus since I saw my first Prevost Bus Conversion in 1993 while sitting atop of our rented Minni-Winni in the RV lot of the Circus Circus Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, NV.  I briefly researched buying a bus in 2000 when facing eviction from my Glendale, CA apartment.  My idea was to live in the Art Center parking lot to finish my final terms.  This plan was thwarted by student loans and a forgiving landlord.  In 2001 I met my future wife, Basey.  The first thing I learned about Basey is that every Sunday she wanted to go someplace new.  She would drive from Glendale to Ventura, for example, simply because she had never been.  I later learned that Basey’s quest for new places is not limited to Sunday only, but can extend to the other 6 days, and if left unattended for 2 years will erupt into large, problematic yearnings only quenched by the sale of our home.  Prior to this trip, Basey and I spent 104 consecutive weekends sanding drywall and pulling Romex.  Our house was completed in October, 2006, when we decided to sell it.  Nobody would decide to buy it until May 2007.  We left Los Angeles on July 4, 2007.

Thanks to everyone who cares enough to read our travel log, and special thanks to those who have hosted us in their driveways.  We will try to keep this site current, if you have any editorial content to contribute, don’t be shy -

  3. In your drawing I see Vinnie is driving…at least I assume it’s Vinnie since he takes issue w/ Leo even eating thus I’m sure Leo would never be allowed to pilot BigBus. What I want to know is what happend to Tunsis the driving cat? Did Vin or Leo make the kill? & was it difficult to clean-up?

  4. This is like the Grand-Daddy of all Dolphins! Amazing stuff, Klopper, but not unexpected. You gotta’ take Basey to Death Valley, or wherever it is we spent the night on top of the Dolphin in cruise control. Stacy (wife), Skylar (daughter) and I are in Fort Collins where I’m interning at the Colorado State University Counseling Center. Hopefully I’ll be done with my Psych doctorate in May-ish. If you guys swing up through Colorado, you’ve definitely got a place to stay.
